Jet Zero Australia Commences FEED with Technip Energies to Advance Australia’s First Bioethanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project

Jet Zero Australia Pty Ltd (Jet Zero) is pleased to announce the commencement of Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) with Technip Energies (T.EN) for Project Ulysses, an ethanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project.

This biofuel facility located in Townsville, Australia aims to produce 102 million litres of SAF and 11 million litres of renewable diesel annually using Australian bioethanol.

The Project will utilise LanzaJet’s Alcohol to Jet (ATJ) technology. LanzaJet is a sustainable aviation fuels technology company and fuels producer with a proprietary process that incorporates Technip Energies’ patented Hummingbird® technology converting ethanol to ethylene. Following this, LanzaJet’s oligomerisation and hydrogenation technology will transform the ethylene into SAF and renewable diesel.

This first stage of FEED engineering will commence with Front End Value Engineering and is expected to take several months, with the remainder of FEED expected to be complete ahead of Final investment Decision (FID) targeted for 2025.

The Project has already received crucial support from industry partners including Airbus, Qantas and Idemitsu as well as the Australian Government via the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as part of the Advancing Renewables Program and the Queensland Government through the Queensland New-Industry Development Strategy (QNIDS).

Project Ulysses is set to make a substantial regional economic impact on North Queensland by delivering over 100 direct skilled operational jobs and contributing to Australia’s energy security by bolstering domestic jet fuel production for both civilian and government aircraft.

Bhaskar Patel, SVP Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals & Circularity at Technip Energies, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Jet Zero Australia for this project, which perfectly aligns with Technip Energies’ ambition of providing decarbonisation solutions for hard-to-abate industries such as aviation. Our team is excited to utilize our technical skills, our innovative Hummingbird® technology and our execution capabilities to offer a carbon-efficient pathway to SAF. SAF is a crucial step towards reducing emissions, building domestic resilience, and enhancing energy security.”

Ed Mason, CEO of Jet Zero Australia, said: “Our vision of supplying the Australian aviation sector with sustainable fuels is becoming a reality with the commencement of this stage of engineering activities with Technip Energies, a highly regarded global EPC contractor. Their understanding of SAF technologies, their experience in project development and their strong presence in Australia were all key factors in awarding Technip Energies the contract following a competitive tender process.”

Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet, said: “Australia’s efforts to build a domestic SAF industry will help to improve energy security and create jobs, setting a powerful example across the world. LanzaJet’s ethanol-to-SAF technology is well-suited to enable this transition. We’re grateful to be working alongside capable and innovative companies like Jet Zero Australia and Technip Energies to continue to progress the country’s first SAF project, proving the industry can scale beyond borders and lead the transportation sector’s ability to decarbonise.”
